John has a strong legal and commercial understanding of the trade, energy (including oil and gas, mining/natural resources, hydrogen and renewables), infrastructure and finance sectors. John is experienced in working with most international arbitration rules and recognised institutions, including ICC, LCIA, SIAC, LMAA, HKIAC, CIETAC and UNCITRAL, and frequently appears as counsel before arbitral tribunals. He has also advised clients regarding regulatory and internal investigations and appeared as counsel before regulatory tribunals.

John’s clients range from sovereign states, state owned entities, and multinational and domestic companies, to trading houses, private equity firms and family offices. He has more than 20 years of legal experience across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East, having previously worked at Australian, English and American law firms, including six years in Hong Kong.

    Advising listed mining company regarding potential expropriation claim against host state for mining projects worth >US$500M.

  • International Arbitration

    Acted on behalf of oil ministry of Middle-Eastern Government against petroleum supplier in US$9 million demurrage claim (UNCITRAL arb.)

  • International Arbitration

    Acted for Indian energy major in seven separate energy/ infrastructure related contractual disputes (ICC arbitrations) totalling circa US$450 million.

  • International Arbitration

    Advised private Singaporean sustainable transport company regarding USD9M contractual claims against Norwegian and Vietnamese equipment manufacturers (SIAC).

  • Commercial Litigation

    Acted on behalf of a Middle-Eastern Government in English Supreme Court proceedings regarding state immunity challenge to enforcement proceedings and documentary credits issues.

  • Commercial Litigation

    Advised Swiss commodity brokerage company regarding contractual dispute with Australian counterparty as to commission agreement.

  • Commercial Litigation

    Advised private Australian mining company regarding potential fraud and breach of directors’ duties by certain directors.

  • Finance Litigation    

    Acted on behalf of a Middle-Eastern Government in English Supreme Court proceedings regarding state immunity challenge to enforcement proceedings and documentary credits issues.

    Acted on behalf of Turkish-based multinational commodities conglomerate in EUR12 million financing dispute (LCIA).

    Secured positive finding in joint HMRC and SOCA investigation (PACE powers) against a Big Four accounting firm regarding ISDA and ForEx deal.
