Alan is a shipping and international trade associate based in the firm's Dubai office, specialising in the swift resolution of wet and dry shipping disputes.

On the dry shipping side, Alan advises owners, managers, charterers and P&I clubs in a variety of disputes arising out of charterparties and bills of lading.
Alan's expertise spans issues such as seaworthiness, demurrage, force majeure, contracts of affreightment, off-specification bunkers, unsafe ports, off-hire, hull fouling, liquefaction, cargo damage, dangerous cargo, ice damage and shortage. He has also provided strategic advice on high-profile matters, including the impact of Red Sea attacks and the Panama Canal droughts.
Additionally, Alan has significant experience advising clients in disputes involving ship sale and purchase, sale and leaseback, superyachts and the implications of international sanctions. Alan also advises clients in disputes arising in the Middle East, particularly in the UAE and in the KSA.
On the wet shipping side, Alan advises shipowners, managers, P&I clubs and hull and machinery insurers on matters related to salvage, fires, general average and in the aftermath of groundings.
Alan generally represents his clients in arbitrations conducted under the LMAA and LCIA terms and has substantial experience in High Court litigation, particularly in the Admiralty Court.
Ship, Sale & Purchase
Advising shipowners in multi-million-dollar ship sale and purchase disputes, including acting on shipowners' behalf in LMAA arbitration and liaising with local counsel in various jurisdictions regarding enforcement and security.
Charterparty & Bill of Lading
Advising shipowners in disputes relating to demurrage and charterparty repudiation, including acting on shipowners' behalf in LMAA arbitrations. Assisting shipowners in off-hire claims, disputes relating to dangerous cargo and disputes arising under bills of lading due to cargo damage and shortage.
Casualties & Vessel Damage
Advising shipowners on claims exposure and prospects of recovery after vessel groundings, damage in ports and in ice, including advice on charterparty interpretation and safe port warranties. Similarly, assisting shipowners in cases of missing crew and following fires aboard the vessel.
Seaworthiness
Advising shipowners on issues of seaworthiness and prospects of recovery from head shipowners' following a breakdown at sea and a subsequent deviation for repairs, including acting on shipowners' behalf in LMAA arbitration.
War Risks
Assisting clients with charterparty and insurance policy interpretation following the Red Sea attacks. Similarly, assisting shipowners with charterparty interpretation and advice on 'War Risks' generally after receiving orders to call at a Ukrainian load port during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Salvage
Acting on shipowners' behalf in an Admiralty Court claim for salvage remuneration after the vessel suffered an engine breakdown after unberthing, including the provision of advice on settlement and likely Article 13 awards.
General Average
Advising cargo underwriters on the recoverability of general average contributions after GA was declared in response to the hijacking of the vessel, and the subsequent payment of a multi-million-dollar ransom by shipowners.
Superyachts
Advising a designer of luxury interiors for superyachts in a dispute with a Spanish shipyard after the build was delayed. Similarly, assisting superyacht owners in disputes with charterers and brokers, including the provision of advice on yacht agency agreements and MYBA charter interpretation.
Contract Interpretation
Assisting clients generally with charterparty and general contract interpretation, including reviewing and updating an LPG operator's suite of charterparties and advising manufacturers in respect of purchase order obligations and exposure.
Sanctions
Advising shipowners on the implications of international sanctions following orders to call at Russian ports and/or to carry Russian-origin oil products.
