Josh has spent two years based in Greece and four years in London, giving him a well-rounded perspective on working with owners, charterers, salvors, P&I Clubs and other insurers. He regularly represents clients in English Admiralty Court and Commercial Court proceedings, as well as LMAA arbitrations, mediations and other forms of dispute resolution.

With extensive experience handling marine casualties, salvage, wreck removal and collisions, Josh frequently assists clients with live casualties as well as immediate remedies. He advises on issues such as seaworthiness, abandonment, cargo claims, general average, force majeure, unsafe ports, and limitation of liability. Josh has also worked on many high-profile matters, including incidents arising from the Red Sea attacks and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On the dry side, Josh’s expertise covers claims related to off-hire, demurrage, cargo and ship damage, off-spec bunkers, speed and performance, and disputes under charterparties and bills of lading. He also advises owners and charterers on international sanctions.

Josh has also spent time on secondment with a leading energy company in the Middle East, further broadening his experience.

Experience

  • Cargo Claims

    Advising owners and insurers on an US$18m deck cargo claim after the vessel encountered heavy weather and the deck cargo broke free from its lashings damaging the vessel and falling into the ocean, resulting in claims in multiple jurisdictions requiring anti-suit injunction applications and arbitrations.

  • Charterparty & Bills of Lading

    Acting for owners, charterers and insurers in disputes relating to demurrage, charterparty repudiation, off-hire, dangerous cargo, abandonment, bailment, Hague Visby Rules and generally claims arising under bills of lading.

  • M/Y “BIG KAHUNA” [2024] EWHC 937 (Admlty)

    Acting for owners and insurers in relation to a yacht fire in Corfu Marina, Greece which led to the sinking and total loss of four yachts. Commencing limitation proceedings in England & Wales to set up a limitation fund while successfully defeating, rather unusually, a forum non-conveniens application and foreign proceedings.

  • Casualties

    Advising owners, insurers, charterers, and trading houses alike on issues and obligations arising out of groundings, breakdowns, collisions, fires, wreck removals, CTL, war risks, force majeure and abandonment, as well as recovery actions.

  • Salvage

    Advising salvors and owners in numerous LOF, Admiralty Court, and Ad Hoc claims for salvage remuneration, as well as assisting with the initial casualty response, security arrangements, ports of refuge, and operational issues. Providing advice to salvors and owners on likely awards and representing them in arbitration and settlement discussions.

  • Wreck Removal

    Advising and drafting wreck removal contracts for owners and insurers, as well as managing arbitrations arising out of front-page casualties and significant Wreckhire & Wreckstage disputes.

  • War Risk

    Advising clients on issues arising under charterparties, bills of lading and insurance policies following voyage orders given during the Red Sea attacks and Russia-Ukraine conflict.
