With a strong international perspective, Marianthi advises and represents clients in contentious proceedings (English courts, international arbitrations and mediations), contract negotiations and drafting, as well as dispute avoidance strategies.
Her clients (including shipowners, H&M, P&I, war risk and cargo insurers) value her strategic, commercially attuned approach, which combines solid academic expertise with specialist practical experience. Her experience includes high-profile superyacht wreck removals in Italy and France, general average disputes, cargo damage claims and complex insurance coverage cases.
Marianthi is a member of the Comité Maritime International’s (CMI) International Working Group on Maritime Decarbonisation. As part of Stephenson Harwood’s maritime decarbonisation team, she helps clients respond to the regulatory, commercial and practical challenges posed by the energy transition.
Marianthi is able to appreciate the client’s perspective and commercial concerns having spent time on secondment to a leading shipping company, assisting with vessel sales and purchases and general corporate housekeeping. She also spent six months on secondment to the firm’s Singapore office.
While qualified and practising law in England and Wales, Marianthi is also qualified in Greece. She is a native Greek speaker and fluent in Spanish and French.
Wreck removals
Managed the wreck removal processes of two widely publicised superyachts on behalf of P&I Insurers/Owners – one that sank in Italy and another that caught fire in St Tropez.
Maritime decarbonisation
Drafted bespoke EU ETS clause for inclusion in MOA; responding to client queries and keeping updated on issues relevant to EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime and IMO regulations, assisting clients respond to the regulatory, commercial and practical challenges of the energy transition.
General average disputes
Handled various cases for P&I Insurers/Owners having declared general average seeking recovery from cargo interests.
Group of shipowning and shipmanagement companies
Three-month secondment to assist with the sale and purchase and financing of 15 vessels. Also assisted with general corporate housekeeping matters.
Cargo reinsurers
Assisted London market Cargo Reinsurers following a missile attack to the vessel.
War risk insurers
Acted for War Risk Insurers in a $5 billion insurance coverage dispute heard in a 3-month trial in the High Court, between aircraft lessors and All Risk and War Risk insurers regarding the aircraft remaining in Russia following the war in Ukraine (named one of The Lawyer’s top 20 cases of 2024).
