Matthew Angell is an important member of our commercial, data, and technology team, known for his ability to advise clients across a range of sectors.  

He has particular experience in the art and cultural property sector, having been seconded to Qatar Museums' legal department, where he advises sector-leading clients on a range of non-contentious art-related matters, including sales, commissions, loans and exhibitions. Matthew's expertise extends to the life sciences and technology sectors, where he has experience drafting complex service, manufacturing, and supply agreements for a range of clients. 

In relation to data protection, Matthew assists clients to establish robust compliance frameworks. He helps clients to manage their statutory data protection obligations by drafting policy documents, privacy notices, and intra-group agreements that align with best practice standards and also handling data subject access requests across a range of sectors. Matthew's work in this area has included working with financial institutions and insolvency practitioners as well as companies collecting personal data in, and transferring personal data to, a number of jurisdictions. 

Clients appreciate Matthew's ability to tailor his legal advice to the commercial realities clients find themselves in. Clients view Matthew as an important advisor in light of his pragmatic approach and commercial advice.

Experience

  • Drafting of long term production and distribution agreements with a leading alcoholic beverage brand owner.

    Drafted and negotiated a number of long term agreements for the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages between our client and a leading alcoholic beverage brand owner as part of an acquisition. 

    Also advised on transitional service arrangements key to the transaction

  • Advising a large retail facility on its general commercial contracts.

    Advised a large UK-based retail facility on a range of its general commercial contracts including NDAs, services agreements and software licences. 

    Also advised the client on elements of its operational management agreements. 

  • Sale of a painting by a prominent twentieth century French artist.

    Drafted and negotiated an agreement with a buyer's agent for the multi-million pound sale of a key work by a prominent twentieth century French artist. 

    Advised our seller client on their post-sale obligations under the agreement. 

  • Advising on the agreement to host Art Basel in Doha, Qatar.

    Provided key legal advice to a client on a long term agreement to host a new edition of Art Basel in Doha, Qatar. 

    Continue to advise the same client on agreements related to the art fair, including service and collaboration agreements. 

  • Advising an accountancy firm on a suite of data protection policy documents.

    Drafted and advised an accountancy firm on a full suite of data protection policy documents to ensure a best practice approach to compliance with data protection legislation ahead of potential investment in the institution. 

  • Advising a financial institution on cross-border data transfer risk assessments.

    Advised a financial institution on its completion of a number of data protection impact assessments ahead of transfers of personal data to a number of its affiliate entities in different jurisdictions. 

  • Negotiating DORA addendums.

    Drafted and negotiated a number of contract addendums for a financial institution with its IT vendors to address the requirements of the Digital Operational Resilience Act.
