Philipp Mueller is an Associate in Stephenson Harwood's Civil Fraud and Asset Recovery team. His practice focuses on complex asset recovery and enforcement involving states and state-owned entities, where he advises on recovery strategies and challenges to sovereign immunity.
Philipp acts for, among others, the former shareholders of Yukos Oil Company in relation to the enforcement in England of a $50+ billion arbitration award against the Russian Federation. He was involved in defeating the Russian Federation's challenge to the jurisdiction of the English Courts and obtaining the largest Court order in English legal history. The case remains ongoing before the English High Court and the Court of Appeal and was named a Top 20 Case by the Lawyer for 2023.
More widely, Philipp acts for corporates, individuals, and public entities in international litigation and arbitration proceedings. He has a particular interest in the intersection of fraud and technology, including tracing and recovery of cryptoassets.

Advised and acted for the former shareholders of Yukos Oil Company in relation to the enforcement in England of a US$50+ billion arbitration award against the Russian Federation, including successfully defeating Russia’s arguments on state immunity in the High Court and the Court of Appeal, and obtaining an order for recognition and enforcement following a trial of preliminary issues.

Various Claimants v Visa Europe Ltd and others; Various Claimants v MasterCard Inc and others
Advised and acted for over 1,500 claimants in 14 separate claims (together valued at over £800 million) before the Competition Appeal Tribunal against Visa and MasterCard for the recovery of interchange fees that were imposed on the claimants by the card schemes in contravention of European and UK competition law.
