Rod advises charterers, Clubs and owners on shipping casualties and losses of all kinds and has extensive experience of running investigations and protecting client interests both at the scene and post loss. He also assists his clients with on other kinds of risk exposures, such as personal injury or death, seafarer employment, regulation and compliance, vessel tracking systems and physical and cyber security.

 
Rod’s experience in government and as the head of the UK Coastguard is valued by the UK Overseas Territories and other small island states when confronted by complex or risky shipping issues.  

He’s known for his straightforward, commercially sensible advice and bringing the technical complexities of a case alive to non technical people by using clear and simple language.

Experience

  • Maersk

    Advised the US legal team on the technical aspects of the DALI allision, and supported Maersk personnel through interviews with the US authorities.
  • Nordisk/Hav Fleet

    Supported the Hav fleet to continue trading into UK ports when their vessels were incorrectly sanctioned. Forced a change in government policy to enable the free movement of these ships.
  • NorthStandard/Claus Peter Offen

    Advised the Club and owners on the merits of a collision with consequent fatalities, based upon a detailed analysis of tracking and VDR information.
  • Stolt Tankers

    Supported owners following a tank overpressure with consequent damage by providing technical support and advice on the technical merits. Carried out crew interviews and detailed assessment of the available evidence.
  • UK Overseas Territory

    Led the negotiations for a contract renewal for a supply vessel, critical to the OT’s fishery, scientific and environmental programmes.
  • Quark Expeditions

    Advised the client on bringing aircrew into the scope of the Maritime Labour Convention.
