Stephenson Harwood launches transitioning at work policy

13/08/2020

Law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP has introduced a policy and approach to support anyone transitioning at work, or who has a trans history.

The policy provides guidance to individuals, line managers, colleagues and the human resources department on how to best support a trans colleague, whether they are transitioning, or let us know that they have a trans history.

"At Stephenson Harwood, we want everyone to be themselves and thrive at work, and in their personal lives," said Liz Cope, head of diversity and inclusion, Stephenson Harwood. "That's why it's so important to us that trans colleagues know that they are, and will continue to be, respected and valued, and that we provide a working environment that actively supports them to transition and be themselves at work. Having this policy is a key part of how we're demonstrating this to our people."

We know that everyone's transition will be unique to them. The policy outlines a range of steps and support available, which includes a dedicated point of contact in the human resources team to work with colleagues on a confidential action plan to manage their transition at work, paid time off for transition-related appointments and treatment, and signposting to wider resources such as the firm's Shout (LGBTQ+ network) and Employee Assistance Programme, and external services. It also describes the role that can be played by line managers and the human resources team, to enable everyone to create a positive and supportive work environment for a colleague who is transitioning.
