Bertie is a Managing Associate in our Projects, Energy, and Infrastructure team, specialising in the financing of energy and infrastructure projects. With over 12 years’ experience, he advises sponsors, borrowers, and financiers on a wide range of projects in the UK and developing markets, particularly in Eastern Europe and the CIS.

Bertie’s expertise spans all forms of project and related financings across the energy sector - including renewables, energy transition, and traditional oil and gas - as well as transport and other infrastructure sectors. His early career focused on upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas projects, but his practice has since expanded to cover commercial structuring and financings in renewables, transport, and a variety of decarbonisation technologies such as hydrogen, energy from waste, static batteries, and electric vehicle fleet financings.

Bertie’s broad experience enables him to offer pragmatic, sector-specific solutions to complex challenges, drawing on his deep understanding of both commercial and technical aspects. He is known for his ability to navigate multifaceted transactions and deliver results for clients operating in dynamic and evolving markets.

Experience

  • Project NextGen    

    Advised Hitachi Rail and FirstGroup on forming NextGen AssetCo, a joint venture to purchase and lease up to 1,000 electric bus batteries (£100 million), covering structuring, JV, leasing, and debt financing arrangements.

  • National Westminster Bank PLC    

    Advised NatWest on a £20 million project finance facility to an eEnergy SPV for UK renewables projects, including solar, EV charging, smart meters, and LED lighting for schools and hospitals.

  • EBRD and Black Sea Trade and Development Bank    

    Acted for EBRD and BSTDB on a €36 million joint financing of three PV solar plants (47MWp) in Ukraine for a Scatec Solar and Rengy JV. Later advised on debt restructuring due to changes in Ukraine’s renewable power procurement and feed-in-tariff.

  • EBRD    

    Acting for EBRD on its €24.5 million project financing of a 30MWp solar plant in the Kamianka region of Ukraine for Scatec Solar. Subsequently advised on restructuring of the debt in respect of the changes to renewable power procurement and the associated feed-in-tariff in Ukraine.

  • NextEnergy Solar Fund    

    Advised NextEnergy Solar Holdings VI Ltd on a new £70 million revolving credit facility from Santander, used to refinance existing facilities and fund further UK solar investments.

  • WrightBus

    Advised WrightBus, the Northern Ireland based electric and hydrogen powered bus and truck manufacturer, on their £150 million working capital debt package from HSBC including a syndicated revolving credit facility and a receivables purchase facility.

  • Gazprombank    

    US$489 million project financing of the construction by SOCAR Polymer of petrochemical facilities in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan.

  • Interpipe    

    Acted for Interpipe on the 2019 consensual restructuring of its US $1 billion debt portfolio, involving complex negotiations with multiple creditor groups across bank debt, bonds, and equity-linked securities.

  • EBRD    

    US $200 million project financing of Lukoil's continued participation in and the further development of stage 1 of the Shah Deniz gas field off the coast of Azerbaijan.

  • GPB Global Resources    

    US $1 billion prepayment facility to fund a joint venture between Gazprombank and PDVSA to further develop the Bachaquero Tierra and Lagunillas Tierra oil and gas fields located in the State of Zulia in the western region Venezuela.
