Stephenson Harwood supports South Georgia Heritage Trust pro bono

Law firm Stephenson Harwood’s Maritime, Trade and Offshore team have provided pro bono legal advice to the South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT) in connection with its fundraising cruise ‘In the Footsteps of Shackleton’ which sets off today, 4 November 2026.

Founded in 2005, SGHT is dedicated to conserving South Georgia’s unique wildlife and environment, as well as preserving the island’s human history through initiatives such as the South Georgia Museum. The Trust’s latest initiative commemorates the life and legacy of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who played a significant role in the history of South Georgia and is buried on the island.

The Stephenson Harwood team advised SGHT on the charter of a Swan Hellenic expedition cruise ship, including the negotiation and completion of the charterparty, passenger terms and conditions of carriage, and relevant waivers for use with a planned documentary film of the voyage. This work has enabled SGHT to deliver a unique twenty-day voyage to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands which will support both the cruise and production of the documentary, raising vital funds to further the Trust’s conservation and heritage projects.

The team was led by Partner Sean Gibbons, with support from Partner Emma Nowell, Managing Associate Joshua Cunnington, and Associate George Lawrence. Partner and Global Head of Maritime, Trade and Offshore Finance Ian Mace introduced SGHT to the team through work he has previously undertaken with members of the SGHT team.
