Elena specialises in international arbitration, having acted as counsel in numerous complex international arbitrations across a variety of sectors. Elena also specialises in tax matters such as tax litigation, private wealth and taxation in the energy sector.
Prior to joining Stephenson Harwood, Elena has been a member of the International Arbitration Department of Spain´s State Lawyers´ Office at the Ministry of Justice for more than ten years, where she has represented Spain in more than 50 investment arbitrations under ICSID, SCC and UNCITRAL rules regarding claims of over 25 billion euros mainly on renewable energy projects, taxation, bank financing of projects and mining. She has also acted as counsel for Spain in more than 10 award annulment proceedings.
As a State Tax Inspector (currently on leave of absence) she has held various responsibilities at Spain´s State Agency for Tax Administration, the Madrid Regional Economic-Administrative Tribunal and the Ministry of Finance, where she was the Head of Tax Advice at the Cabinet of the Secretary of State for Taxes.
Elena was previously a lawyer at another leading international law firm.
