Ellen Dixon is an associate in Stephenson Harwood LLP's international arbitration team, where she supports a diverse range of multinational and international companies. Ellen most frequently works on disputes which have an African or Asian aspect, where she leverages her experience in these jurisdictions to assist clients to obtain their goals while navigating complex arbitration processes. Ellen's clients include a large Asian oil and gas company and multinational African banks, who rely on her strategic insight and commercial acumen to resolve high-stakes disputes efficiently.  

Ellen provides comprehensive support in international arbitration, including under LCIA, ICC, LMAA, and GAFTA rules, as well as ad hoc arbitrations. Her litigation experience further enhances her ability to assist clients with enforcement of arbitral awards, securities, injunctions, and commercial disputes. Ellen's approach ensures that clients can confidently pursue their legal rights knowing they have a steadfast advocate in their corner.  

Active in the arbitration community, Ellen participates in initiatives like the Africa Arbitration Academy, Very Young Arbitration Practitioners (publishing A Reflection on the Withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty in collaboration with Jus Mundi) and the Young International Arbitration Group of the LCIA. Experience

  • State owned oil company

    Acting for a West African state-owned oil company against a leading International Oil Company in an ad hoc arbitration in a claim of over US$1.5 billion, arising from a dispute over the application of pre-emption rights in a joint venture contract. 

  • LNG dispute

    Acted for GAIL (India) Limited, the Indian state-owned gas company, in a LCIA arbitration relating to claims of US$1.8 billion arising from a dispute over the non-delivery of LNG supplies. We achieved a successful outcome for the client by way of an amicable settlement shortly before the hearing. 

  • East African bank

    Acting for an East African bank in a multi-party LCIA arbitration involving a complex syndicated financing dispute.  The total value of the claim is circa US$1 billion, and the case involves knotty issues of cross border financing, security structuring, and insolvency. English law, London seat. 

  • Shareholder dispute in banking sector

    Advising one of Africa's largest banking groups in a London-seated LCIA arbitration concerning the exercise of a put option. The dispute is in excess of US$50 million.

  • Shareholder dispute

    Acting for an African conglomerate with a significant operation in the ports and infrastructure sector. The London-seated LCIA arbitration concerns allegations that the African conglomerate has breached certain provisions of shareholder agreements, which are governed by the laws of an African state. Co-counselling with an African firm in the arbitration.
