Elton Chan is a seasoned practitioner who provides precise and pragmatic advice to his clients on a wide range of maritime finance and corporate lending transactions. His deep understanding of market dynamics enables him to deliver structured, risk-aware solutions tailored to institutional objectives.

In the maritime sector, Elton advises shipowners, banks, leasing companies, funds and other institutions on a broad range of matters, covering shipbuilding contracts, refund guarantees, and the full spectrum of ship finance transactions: pre- and post-delivery loan facilities, sale and leaseback transactions, operating leases, portfolio sale and financing, distressed asset sales and other investment opportunities. Elton's clients benefit from his practical approach and ability to stay ahead by anticipating and mitigating risks.

Elton also regularly represents lenders and borrowers in various types of corporate lending transactions, with a focus on real estate finance transactions, including investment-grade lending, development loans and refinancing transactions. His experience spans senior and mezzanine debt, loan restructurings, and portfolio refinancing.

Experience

  • Ship finance senior debt transactions  

    Advised major international banks and financial institutions on various secured senior debt transactions, involving both direct lending to shipowners and to financial leasing companies to back-leverage existing lease transactions.

  • Sale and leaseback

    Advised major international financial leasing companies on both pre- and post-delivery sale and leaseback transactions involving various types of vessels, such as bulk carriers, containers, car carriers, offshore supply vessels, FPSOs and other maritime assets.

  • Real estate finance

    Advised a major international bank on the refinancing for a Hong Kong-listed real estate investment trust encompassing 83 properties across England and Scotland, all leased to one of the largest car servicing and repair companies in the United Kingdom.

  • Corporate and structured lending    

    Advised a wide spectrum of clients – including major local and international banks, credit funds, conglomerates and family offices on a wide range of corporate and structured lending transactions.

  • Green & sustainable finance  

    Advised a leading Chinese bank on a RMB 2.35 billion syndicated term loan facilities (with an additional greenshoe option for RMB 1 billion) made available to a Hong Kong-listed subsidiary of a water and environment service provider, with the facility providing that the loan proceed must be applied in accordance with the borrower's environmental method statements which must be certified by HKQAA confirming alignment with the Green Finance Certification Scheme.

  • Debt restructuring and special situations  

    Advised various financial institutions, corporate trustees, intermediaries, arrangers, private credit funds and other conglomerates on a range of debt restructuring and special situations transactions.

  • Trade finance    

    Advised various financial institutions and conglomerates on various factoring, opening account and other trade and commodities finance-related matters.
