James supports clients including employers, main contractors and subcontractors with their most challenging construction and PFI disputes.

He acts on claims arising from the design, construction and maintenance of assets including car parks, data centres, government buildings, high-rise buildings, hospitals, hotels, listed buildings, office towers, power plants, pumping stations, residential apartments, schools, social housing and warehouses.

James also represents rolling stock manufacturers and train operating companies in high-profile and high-value rail disputes.

James has experience of various dispute resolution procedures including litigation, adjudication, arbitration, mediation, expert determination and judicial review.

James joined Stephenson Harwood in 2014 and trained in the firm's London and Singapore offices.

Experience

  • PFI cladding dispute    

    Acting for the refurbishment contractor on a £195m claim brought by the PFI project company and maintenance contractor relating to alleged fire safety defects on numerous social housing tower blocks.

  • Developer remediation contract judicial review

    Acting for the developer in a judicial review of decisions made by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities & Local Government in relation to the developer remediation contract.

  • Warehouse defects litigation  

    Acting for global drinks company Accolade Wines in a £160 million claim relating to the defective design and construction of the largest wine production and distribution facility in the UK, involving multiparty litigation in the TCC.

  • Office tower delay adjudication    

    Acting for the main contractor in an adjudication with its façade subcontractor arising from delays to completion of an office tower in London.

  • PFI schools disputes    

    Acting for the facilities management contractor in multiple adjudications and TCC litigation against the PFI project company relating to a number of disputes including payment and defects claims relating to eight schools procured under the Building Schools for the Future scheme.

  • Data centre dispute    

    Acting for the main contractor in relation to a number of issues arising on a data centre project in London.

  • Residential apartments cladding litigation

    Acting for the leaseholders and management company in a claim under the Defective Premises Act arising from the presence of combustible cladding and other fire safety defects at a high-rise residential development in London.

  • PFI hospital defects and deductions dispute    

    Acting for the maintenance contractor in a PFI dispute involving the NHS Trust, PFI project company and the building contractor in relation to liability to carry out remedial works arising from various defects in an NHS hospital as well as payment deductions made across a number of years.

  • Biomass power plant delays arbitration    

    Acting for the main contractor in a multi-million pound ICC arbitration with its subcontractor arising from delays to completion of a biomass power plant.

  • HM Treasury and HMRC offices litigation    

    Acting for the maintenance contractor in TCC litigation relating to alleged defects in the design and construction and maintenance of the HM Treasury and HMRC offices at 100 Parliament Street.
