Carlos González is a partner who specialises in complex litigation and arbitration, corporate, securities and finance matters and restructuring and insolvency.

He has more than twelve years’ experience advising clients on high-stakes disputes, with a particular focus on finance litigation, shareholder disputes, securities, M&A related claims, restructuring litigation and insolvency proceedings.

His experience includes several Spanish court proceedings, international arbitrations (before the ICC and CIAM-CIAR), pre-litigation strategy, settlement negotiations and disputes arising from shareholder agreements, finance agreements, corporate transactions and takeover bids. Carlos has represented international hedge funds, European banks, investment funds, private equity houses, listed companies, shareholders and senior executives in complex and commercially sensitive matters.

Carlos helps clients resolve complex disputes by combining strong technical ability, deep legal knowledge, meticulous attention to detail and strategic judgement with a pragmatic focus on achieving successful and efficient outcomes.

Before joining Stephenson Harwood, Carlos was a partner at J. Almoguera Abogados, the Spanish disputes boutique that became Stephenson Harwood’s Madrid office.

In 2019, he was seconded to the London office of Boies Schiller Flexner. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and a member of the Spanish Business Litigation Club, where he led CEL-35, its young practitioners’ section. Carlos holds degrees in Law and Business Administration from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

  • Enforcement of sponsor guarantees

    Acting as counsel for a group of major international hedge funds and European banks in several high-stakes court proceedings in Spain relating to the enforcement of sponsor guarantees granted in connection with toll road projects in Spain. 

  • International ICC arbitration on a shareholder dispute

    Acting as counsel for a European investment fund in an ICC arbitration seated in Luxembourg relating to a dispute between shareholders. 

  • Takeover and delisting litigation  

    Representing an international hedge fund in court proceedings concerning a takeover bid and the subsequent delisting of a Spanish listed company.

  • Corporate dispute between shareholders

    Advising several shareholders of a well-known Spanish industrial group in connection with a corporate dispute between shareholders.

  • International CIAM-CIAR arbitration on a finance agreement

    Counsel of a Spanish financier in an CIAM-CIAR international arbitration arising out of a finance agreement.

  • Restructuring plan of a hospitality company  

    Co-counsel to a hedge fund in litigation concerning the financing and restructuring of a hospitality company.

  • Shareholders’ dispute in a listed company  

    Counsel a private equity house and a public pension fund as shareholders of a listed company, in a dispute with the company’s founders concerning the shareholders’ agreement.

  • Defence of the CEO in removal litigation  

    Acted as counsel defending the CEO of a major listed Spanish company in litigation concerning his removal and liability as director.

  • Litigation financing and due diligence

    Advised a hedge fund who intends to make its first investment in litigation funding in Spain. 

  • Insolvency proceedings of fashion group Blanco

    Acting as counsel to the international fashion group Blanco in the out-of-court negotiations for the refinancing of its bank debt and the subsequent insolvency proceedings, where the business was sold in a competitive process through a structure that has inspired successive reforms of the Spanish insolvency law.
