Justin helps clients resolve commercial disputes whether in litigation, arbitration, mediation, or pre-proceedings. He has a strong focus on marine and international trade matters, and also handles non-contentious work in that sector. He is fluent in Mandarin and his matters often bear a Chinese element.

He acts in trade, charterparty, offshore, and ship financing disputes for owners, charterers, traders, financiers, Clubs and other market participants. Another part of Justin's practice is noncontentious, drafting and negotiating commercial and maritime contracts, such as shipbuilding contracts, long-term charters, and long-term supply contracts.

Outside the marine and international trade sector, Justin's high-value commercial disputes experience includes shareholders', aviation, cryptocurrency, and construction disputes.

Justin is legally qualified in Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, and England & Wales. Justin was based in Hong Kong for a number of years. He is on the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre's List of Arbitrators and the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration's Panel of Arbitrators, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association.

Justin is recognised as a Senior Accredited Specialist in Maritime and Shipping Law (Singapore Academy of Law).

Experience

  • Chinese leasing - operating leases, shipbuilding

    Acting for Chinese leasing houses on various sale and leaseback and operating lease projects, including contracts for shipbuilding, employment, supervision, management, etc
  • Carriage of goods claims

    Advising carriers and cargo interests on various carriage of goods claims, including containerised (both refrigerated and non-refrigerated), bulk (e.g. ores, coal), liquid (e.g. crude, products), and special cargoes
  • Shipping aspects of M&A transactions

    Advising on the shipping aspects in M&A deals, for example, beyond due diligence, drafting and negotiating the operational contracts for the continuation of works on hulls post-merger.
  • "Chain" disputes

    Acting in disputes for intermediate charterers up and down the charter chain, or for traders with claims under both the sale contract and charter or the bills of lading and charter, involving multiple proceedings at times in different forums.
  • Collision and grounding incidents

    Advising and acting for various owners on collision and grounding matters.
  • Gas supply disputes

    Acting for Chinese enterprises (both state-owned and private) in various disputes arising from liquefied gas supply contracts, in Singapore arbitration.
  • Carbon credits – supply dispute

    Acting in a series of Hong Kong arbitrations involving renewable energy producers and an investment fund arising from trades of carbon credits.
  • Oil tank facility at port – explosion and related disputes

    Acting in a Malaysian arbitration between a trader and a port arising from oil storage tank explosions at a port, including disputes in respect of construction and operational defects.
  • Transhipment services – disputes under EPC and service agreements

    Acting in disputes arising out of a EPC contract for a transhipment system / supply of long-term transhipment services.
  • FSU redelivery dispute

    Acting for the charterer in various disputes arising from the redelivery of a FSU from long-term charter, which was resolved in London arbitration.
